A Costa Mesa man who mailed a pipe bomb to a transvestite prostitute who spurned him, killing the roommate of his intended victim, was sentenced Friday to two life terms in prison plus 10 years.

Darryl Anthony Carr, 35, was convicted Feb. 3 of three federal counts of manufacturing a destructive device and one count each of using an explosive in a felony, mailing an explosive that resulted in death and using a destructive device during a crime of violence.

Carr testified that he first picked up preoperative transsexual Martha Galindo in 1995. Galindo was known as “Jenny” on the streets of Santa Ana.

Carr, an auto body painter, said the relationship gradually evolved into a friendship marked by dinner, movies and trips to Hollywood and Big Bear.

Assistant U.S. Atty. Stephen G. Wolfe argued that Carr was in love with Galindo and became frustrated when Galindo rebuffed his advances. Wolfe said Carr once tried to run Galindo down with his car.

After hearing Galindo was dating someone else, Carr twice planted devices in the boyfriend’s truck, Wolfe said. The prosecutor claimed Carr snapped after Galindo refused to hold his hand when they went to see “Titanic.”

Days later, in February 1998, the pipe bomb arrived at the Galindo home in Santa Ana. It exploded when the package was opened by Galindo’s roommate, Peter Marshall, 36.

Marshall was in a coma for several months before he died.
