Cal State Fullerton will bid to host one of the eight NCAA super-regional baseball playoffs if the Titans win their regional tournament, an athletic department spokesman said Thursday.

Mel Franks said the school will begin taking priority ticket orders at tonight’s home game against Long Beach State.

The super-regional is a best-of-three series between two of the 16 regional winners, June 4-6. The winner of each super-regional advances to the College World Series, June 11-19 in Omaha, Neb.

Fullerton did not bid for a regional, May 28-30, because of a conflict with its graduation ceremony, which will require all parking in the Titan Field area.

Long Beach, hoping for an at-large berth, also will bid for a super-regional if the 49ers advance, but won’t bid for a regional, Athletic Director Bill Shumard said.

Each Big West Conference school will have to pay $89,866 to help the NCAA settle a $54.5-million suit involving salary caps put on some assistant basketball coaches from 1992 to 1995, Commissioner Dennis Farrell said.

The NCAA already has withheld $33,803 per Big West school from normal distribution from various sources, including basketball tournament revenue, Farrell said.

That still leaves $56,063 due from each Big West school by Aug. 24.

Some 2,000 coaches successfully contested a rule that capped their annual salaries at $16,000.

A third of the settlement will come from NCAA reserves with the remaining $36.25 million to be supplied by 310 Division I members. Each school’s share is determined by the basketball conference to which it belongs. USC and UCLA must pay $195,855 each.
