May, Hilleary Advance at Beach Tournament

Misty May and Valinda Hilleary advanced to the women’s main draw of 16 of the Oldsmobile Alero Beach Volleyball tournament Friday at Huntington Beach.

May, from Newport Harbor High and Long Beach State, and Hilleary, from Littleton, Colo., defeated Erin Deiter of Green Bay, Wis., and Deanna Johnson of San Diego, 15-2, in their third match of the day. Also qualifying for the women’s main draw were Angela Rock of Encinitas and Patty Dodd of El Segundo.

In the men’s division: Adam Jewell of San Juan Capistrano and Canyon Ceman of Hermosa Beach qualified for today’s main draw. Others qualifying were Corona del Mar’s Brian Lewis and Manhattan Beach’s David Swatik, and Laguna Hills’ Scott Friedrichsen and Pacific Palisades’ Kevin Martin.

Play begins at 9 a.m. today and the tournament concludes Sunday with the women’s final at 3 p.m. and the men’s final to follow.
