Herbert Fong Jung; Former Santa Paula Grocer

Longtime Santa Paula grocer Herbert Fong Jung died Thursday at his home, surrounded by his family. He was 98.

Jung was born in Canton, China, and immigrated to Porterville at age 17 to work on a family farm.

In 1940, he moved to Santa Paula to join his brothers as owners and managers of Ventura County Market on South Mill Street.

He became familiar to several generations of customers until his retirement in 1978.

In later years, Jung gardened and cared for his grandchildren. He was also active in local cultural groups, including the Ventura County Chinese-American Club.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Lai King Jung of Santa Paula; a son, Sammy Jung of Agoura Hills; three daughters, Sue Lee of Torrance, Joyce Fung-Sen Gin of Ventura and Betty Jung of Thousand Oaks; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

There will be a visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with burial at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura.
