Storytellers, authors and teachers led children into the world of words at a schools event called “Passport to Reading.”

Hundreds of enthusiastic kindergarten through sixth-grade pupils and their parents participated in the reading program and book fair at Royal High School.

Coordinators of the event, teachers Sherry Steffek and Neelu Stafford, said the readers and performers donating their time at the Thursday night event included storyteller Michael McCarty of Los Angeles and local authors Mary Ann Fraser and Alexis O’Neill.

Fraser, author of “Where Are the Night Animals?” and “A Mission for the People,” is a familiar sight at school assemblies.

“It’s nice because the parents are here with the kids, and they get to do it together,” Fraser said.

The students carried “passports” with them as they went from session to session, receiving stickers for each attended.
