Cubs Put Beck on Disabled List
The Chicago Cubs put closer Rod Beck on the 15-day disabled list with a bone spur in the elbow of his pitching arm.
Manager Jim Riggleman said he isn’t sure the elbow spur has anything to do with the veteran right-hander’s recent woes. Beck has blown four saves this year and has a 10.54 earned-run average. Pitcher Ray King was called up from triple-A Iowa to fill Beck’s spot on the Cubs’ roster.
Also, a group led by newspaper owner Michael Gartner will buy the Iowa Cubs at the end of the season and keep the franchise in Des Moines.
Gartner’s group reached an agreement to buy the team from the family of Ken Grandquist, who died April 25 of a stroke suffered eight days earlier.
