The Traffic Commission tonight will consider installing holding lanes at three intersections to make left turns easier and prevent accidents. The City Council will have final approval when funding for the projects becomes available.

Holding lanes allow left turns to be made in two steps: The driver first waits for traffic in one direction to clear before entering the protected median, then completes the turn when traffic in the other direction is clear. The three intersections recommended for holding lanes are La Paz Road at Rancho Niguel Road, Alicia Parkway at Clipper Way and Alicia Parkway at Pelican Way. All have had at least two left turn-related accidents.

The commission meets at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 27841 La Paz Road.
