More Quakes Hit Mammoth Region
A new upsurge of earthquake activity hit a mountainous Eastern Sierra area 12 miles southeast of Mammoth Lakes on Wednesday, with more than 100 temblors recorded, the strongest with magnitudes 4.4 and 4.2.
The quakes were all close to the epicenter of a magnitude 5.6 jolt that occurred May 15 and was followed by more than 1,200 aftershocks.
There was neither damage nor injuries in the latest quakes. The 4.4 quake took place at 2:22 p.m. and the 4.2 at 11:04 a.m. There was also a 4.2 at 8:53 p.m. Tuesday.
Scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey reiterated Wednesday that the quakes have nothing to do with volcanism in the carefully monitored Mammoth area. But they said there is a 3% chance in the next week of another quake in the magnitude 5 range.
