Titans’ Curry Named U.S. Assistant Coach

Denise Curry, the Cal State Fullerton women’s basketball coach, has been named an assistant coach for the 1999 USA Women’s Pan American Games team.

Curry will assist USA Basketball Women’s national team Coach Nell Fortner.Peggie Gillom of Texas A&M; also was named as an assistant Wednesday. The basketball competition will be July 30-Aug. 8 in Winnipeg.

Concordia’s Rachel Lafady and Tricia Mattson earned NAIA All-American honors at the NAIA Track and Field championships in Palm Beach, Fla.

Lafady, a sophomore, earned her second All-American award this season, placing fourth in the 5,000 meters in 18:10.00. In February, Lafady picked up the track program’s first All-American award since 1991, finishing sixth in the 5,000 meters.

Mattson, also a sophomore, finished fifth in the 1,500 meters in 4:39.99, earning her first award. The top six finishers in each event earn All-American honors.

Cypress College sophomore Brad Smith has accepted a basketball scholarship from Long Beach State.

The 6-foot-3 guard from Whittier Christian High averaged 10.4 points and made 73 three-pointers last season. He made 145 three-pointers in his career, fourth-best at the college. He tied a school record with eight three-point baskets en route to a career-high 32 points in the season finale, an 84-79 victory over Golden West.

Leslie Graves, a junior on the Hope International softball team, was named to her third consecutive National Christian College Athletic Assn. All-American team.

The shortstop/catcher hit .409, had 56 hits, 38 runs batted in, and seven home runs this season.

El Dorado’s Sarah Yarbrough has signed to play softball at Hope International, according to the university’s sports information office. Yarbrough was a first-team All-Empire League selection for the last three seasons.

The Zodiac reserve team will play the Emmanuel soccer team at 5 p.m. Saturday before the Zodiacs’ 7:35 game against U.S. Pro-40 Select at Santa Ana Stadium.

The Emmanuel soccer team is a professional First Division soccer team that participates in the Korean Professional league. Admission to the game is included with the purchase of a ticket to the Zodiac-U.S. Pro-40 Select game.
