Saunders Goes on 60-Day DL

Tony Saunders was put on the 60-day disabled list by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, two days after breaking his left arm while throwing a pitch.
Saunders broke his humerus, the bone from the shoulder to the elbow, in the third inning against Texas. He was released from a St. Petersburg, Fla., hospital on Thursday. His injury should take at least three months to heal.
The Devil Rays called up right-hander Dave Eiland from triple-A Durham to take his place on their roster. Eiland made nine starts for Durham.

Detroit left-hander C.J. Nitkowski decided not appeal a two-game suspension for his part in last week’s beanball battle at Cleveland and began serving the penalty Friday. . . . Cleveland outfielder Manny Ramirez appealed his three-game suspension that was to have started Friday. Ramirez was suspended Thursday for charging the mound last Saturday after being hit in the helmet by a pitch from Detroit’s Jeff Weaver.
