A 17-year-old Northridge boy was killed and three other people were seriously injured early Saturday morning in a car crash near Los Angeles International Airport, authorities said.

Robert St. George was riding in a Ford Mustang that was sliced in two in a chain-reaction collision in the 9600 block of South Sepulveda Boulevard, authorities said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident took place about 2:10 a.m., when a Mazda traveling north on Sepulveda apparently had mechanical problems and rear-ended a van, according to Officer Mike Partain, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department.

The van then crossed into the southbound lane of Sepulveda, striking the Mustang. The driver of the Mustang and two passengers, all teenagers, were seriously injured and transported to local hospitals. The drivers of the van and the Mazda were not seriously injured, Partain said.
