Savarese Helps Beat Old Team

Giovanni Savarese scored two goals in his first game against his former New York-New Jersey MetroStar teammates Saturday night as the New England Revolution beat the MetroStars, 4-3, in a shootout at East Rutherford, N.J., before the largest MLS crowd this season.

The game was the opener of a doubleheader at Giants Stadium that also featured an exhibition between Colombia and El Salvador. The games drew 43,192.

John Harkes scored the only goal in the shootout and backup goaltender Jeff Causey, who came on in the final two minutes of regulation, didn’t let the MetroStars beat him in giving the Revolution the victory.

Ivan McKinley scored the Revolution’s other goal in regulation.

Washington 3, Chicago 1--MLS scoring leader Roy Lassiter and Ben Olsen each had a goal and an assist to lift D.C. United before 21,840 at Washington.

It was the fourth consecutive victory for United (7-3), which gained sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference with 17 points. Chicago (7-3) remained atop the Western Conference with 18 points.

Olsen and Lassiter scored in the 65th and 80th minutes, respectively, to break a 1-1 tie.

Miami 2, Tampa Bay 1--The Fusion got goals from Diego Serna and Henry Gutierrez to end a five-game losing streak in front of 8,628 at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Tampa Bay had its winning streak ended at five games, losing for the first time since acquiring Carlos Valderrama from Miami on April 23.
