Goebel Earns Sunset League Title

Courtney Goebel of Marina shot 16-over-par 124 at the 27-hole Sunset League individual golf finals and won her second consecutive league title at Green River.

Goebel and Minnie Choi of Fountain Valley (132) earned the two automatic berths in the Southern Section individual championships Nov. 16 at Mission Lakes Country Club in Desert Hot Springs.

Goebel shot 45 in the morning nine, then had 11 pars and a birdie during an afternoon round of 79. Choi defeated Kayley Parrett of Esperanza for second place with a par on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff.

In Pacific Coast League tennis:

No. 6 Corona del Mar 18, Costa Mesa 0--The No. 1 doubles team of Nicole Charney and Ashley Jacobson swept, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0, for visiting Corona del Mar (12-7, 10-0).

No. 7 Laguna Beach 15, Northwood 3--Rory Steinle and Danielle Schulman of Laguna Beach swept at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, 6-0, 6-0, for Laguna Beach (11-8, 8-2).

In the Sunset League:

Esperanza 17, Fountain Valley 1--Ritchelle Quimambao, taking the place of injured Kelly Six as Esperanza’s No. 1 singles player, swept, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0, in the season’s final league match.

Six, one of the county’s top singles players, has a knee injury and will be examined by a doctor today. Esperanza is 17-2, 9-1.

In Golden West League girls’ volleyball:

Saddleback 3, Westminster 1--Denise De La Rosa had 13 aces and Diem Huynh and Catherine Nguyen had seven kills each to lead host Saddleback (5-11, 4-8) in its 7-15, 15-2, 15-12, 15-2 victory.

In the Serra League:

Mater Dei 3, Lakewood St. Joseph 0--Lindsay Pavlik had 12 kills and teammate Katie Kahlweiss had 10 to help Mater Dei close out its league season with a 15-3, 15-4, 15-9 victory.

Jennifer Ward had 38 assists for the Monarchs (13-1, 5-1), who clinched at least a tie for first place with Santa Margarita, which plays Rosary today.

At the North Orange County boys’ water polo tournament:

No. 5 Servite 17, Palos Verdes Peninsula 12--Dane Jensen scored eight goals, including five in the third quarter, to lead host Servite (17-4) in the second-round game.

Michael Kim had four goals for the Friars, who play their quarterfinal game Friday at 4 p.m. at Servite.

In other tournament games:

Saddleback 15, University 14--Ivan Gonzalez scored the winner with 4 minutes 48 seconds to play. Saddleback (19-2) plays Ventura in a quarterfinal game Friday at Servite.

Bonita 7, Canyon 6--Canyon came on strong in the fourth quarter with two late goals, but it wasn’t enough as Bonita advanced to the quarterfinals. Chris Meyer had three goals to lead Canyon (12-10), which plays Riverside Poly on Friday in a consolation-round game.
