Westminster Rolls Past Saddleback

Westminster receiver Keishun Hollins scored three touchdowns and had an interception, helping the Lions move closer to a playoff berth by beating Saddleback, 42-28, in a Golden West League game Friday at Santa Ana Stadium.

Hollins caught five passes for 108 yards, three of which were touchdowns. All of his touchdowns came in the second quarter. Two were from eight yards and another from 11. Hollins’ pickoff set up his second scoring grab and increased Westminster’s lead to 21-6 with 8:42 left in the second quarter.

Kelly Coburn connected on 12 of 14 passed for 220 yards and three touchdowns for visiting Westminster (5-4, 2-1).

The senior quarterback also scored on a five-yard run, after scooping up a fumble in the fourth quarter, increasing the lead to 42-22.

“It was pretty tough, the line did a good job,” Coburn said. “It was a messy game for us.”

Cande Maldonado scored the Lions’ opening touchdown on a 64-yard run with 2:46 remaining in the first quarter.

The senior had 182 yards in 17 carries. Teammate Vincent Laurel carried the ball eight times for 130 yards.

Ramon Saavedra of Saddleback completed 18 of 34 passes for 293 yards, but three passes were intercepted.

Joel Gonzalez ran in the first touchdown for Saddleback (3-6, 0-4) on a 58-yard run late in the first, finishing with 16 carries for 146 yards.
