Dustin Smith rushed for 216 yards and five touchdowns, leading Capistrano Valley Christian to a 77-12 victory over North Hollywood Campbell Hall in an Academy League game Saturday night at Laguna Beach High School.

Smith broke Capistrano Valley Christian’s career rushing record with a six-yard touchdown run at the end of the first quarter. He has 4,270 yards, breaking Bryant Wolfsberger’s mark of 4,122 set from 1994-96.

Smith had three runs of 20 yards or more among his 28 carries before leaving at the end of the third quarter.

The Eagles (7-1, 3-0) scored touchdowns on 11 of their 12 possessions. Smith’s fourth-quarter replacement, Richard Newhall, carried the ball twice, for touchdowns of 35 and 70 yards. The Capistrano Valley Christian line opened gaping holes and Eagle backs broke tackles all night.

“Before the game, their coach had said that [Smith] was the only player we had,” Eagle Coach Keith Patefield said. “First we showed they couldn’t stop him, and then we showed they couldn’t stop anybody else. Our line did a great job, and they have all year.”

Quarterback Matt Kaplan completed 11 of 26 passes for 138 yards and a touchdown for Campbell Hall (3-5, 1-2), and Derrick Williams returned a first-quarter kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown. But the Capistrano Valley Christian defense shut down the Viking running game, and Booth Fellers intercepted two passes for the Eagles.
