Two Shooting Victims Taken Off Life Support

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A father who apparently shot his 14-month-old daughter and his estranged wife before turning the gun on himself died along with his child after both were taken off life support Sunday night.

An earlier report that the pair had succumbed to their wounds was erroneous, police said. On Saturday, police incorrectly reported that the father and daughter had died, information that was included in a Times story Sunday.

Anaheim police Sgt. Joe Vargas said a desk sergeant who provided the information had been misinformed about the status of the victims. Department officials will be looking into the matter to “ensure this type of situation does not repeat itself,” he said.

Authorities believe Ijaz Hussain, 29, of Whittier shot and injured his daughter, Jasmine, and wounded her mother, Egla, 26, before shooting himself in an apparent murder-suicide.

Officers found the victims in a room at the Parkway Inn on Beach Boulevard at about 5:30 a.m. Saturday after responding to a 911 call made by Egla Hussain.

Egla Hussain remained in critical condition at UCI Medical Center in Orange, a hospital nurse said Sunday. Ijaz Hussain and Jasmine were taken off life support about 6 p.m. Sunday after both were declared brain dead, a hospital nurse said.

Several members from both Egla Hussain’s and her husband’s families participated in the decision to discontinue life support, as did Egla herself.

Detectives believe the shooting resulted from a dispute between the parents.
