Returning to Pepperdine University, where he impressed strongly in his debut last year, Philip Quint, the Russian-born American violinist trained in Moscow and at the Juilliard School in New York City, appears on the Stotsenberg recital series at the Malibu campus. Quint, assisted by pianist Dmitriy Cogan, will play music by Leclair, John Corigliano, Bloch, Brahms, Tchaikovsky and Ravel.

William Windom, Louis Nye, Kathleen Freeman and other stage and screen veterans perform the premiere of Martha Morehead’s play “Four Last Songs,” based on a concept by Jo de Winter about four elderly women in Beverly Hills remembering their lives in wartime Vienna, as they gather for their weekly card game. It’s a California Artists Radio Theatre production, complete with sound effects and an announcer. Recorded for future broadcast on KPFK-FM (90.7).

All Day: Fund-Raiser

Love Ride 16 is billed as the largest motorcycle fund-raising event in the world. Benefiting the Muscular Dystrophy Assn. and The Times’ Reading by 9 literacy program, the event will feature a 50-mile motorcycle caravan from Harley-Davidson in Glendale to Castaic Lake. A motorcycle trade show and performances by stunt riders and skydivers will be among the offerings at Castaic Lake. Topping off the festivities will be a concert performance by veteran rocker Sammy Hagar and his WaboRitas band.

* Love Ride 16 begins at Harley-Davidson, 3717 San Fernando Road, Glendale; concludes at Castaic Lake, located off the Lake Hughes exit of the 5 freeway just north of Magic Mountain. The American Cinematheque will screen Fred Zinneman’s beloved 1955 film version of the Rodgers & Hammerstein western-musical “Oklahoma!” as part of its Great Big 70mm Festival. “Oklahoma!” was the first Todd AO production, and it was shot simultaneously on two separate film stocks: the first at 24 frames per second, which is the 35mm CinemaScope version that most people have seen, and the second at 30 frames per second, which is the 70mm version that the Cinematheque will screen. Actress Shirley Jones, who starred as Laurey in the film, will participate in a post-screening discussion.

Lou Matthews is the latest author to get the full dramatic-reading treatment as part of the New Short Fiction Series at the Beverly Hills Public Library. In his latest work, Matthews--a Pushcart Prize winner and NEA Fiction fellow--has invented a neighborhood between Highland Park and Eagle Rock called “Shaky Town,” the setting for a series of stories that begin with a blood feud between gangs. Sally Shore, Manuel A. Flores, Roberto Garza and Phil Nee will read four of the 15 as yet unpublished tales.
