Edison Field Loses Club Soccer Event

A scheduled soccer game between two of Mexico’s most prestigious clubs has been moved from Edison Field to Los Angeles. Chivas and Cruz Azul, scheduled to play at Edison Field, will meet Dec. 22 at the Coliseum, event manager Paul Mendes said Friday.

Telmex, the Mexican phone company sponsoring the match, preferred to play at the Coliseum.

“They’re just looking at it as that there’s more Mexicans in L.A., and it’s proven that they’ll go to the Coliseum,” Mendes said.

Telmex did not mean to slight Anaheim but never intended to play at Edison Field, said Catherine Milsom, manager of public relations and local promotions for the company.

In a contract signed with a Mexican promotional company, Telmex agreed to pay $500,000 in prize money for a five-game series between the clubs, including two games in Mexico and one each in Chicago, Houston and at the Coliseum. The Edison Field date was set after a scheduling conflict with the Coliseum, which was later resolved.
