Josh Herrera rushed off right tackle for a 20-yard touchdown with 40 seconds left to play to lift La Habra to the Freeway League title with a 39-32 victory over Buena Park Friday night at La Habra High.
Herrera’s run capped a 53-yard scoring drive, which was set up by a 32-yard Buena Park punt that went out of bounds at the La Habra 47. Herrera carried on all six plays of the game-winning drive.
Herrera finished with 302 yards and four touchdowns in 40 carries. It was the second 300-yard rushing performance this season for Herrera, who also hit that mark on Oct. 15 against Sonora.
With Buena Park leading 32-24 with four minutes left, Herrera scored from five yards to cap an 87-yard scoring drive. His two-point conversion run tied the score at 32-32.
The Highlanders (6-4, 5-0 in league) started the game’s scoring when Randall Parra threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to Grant West with 7:23 left in the first quarter. West would also have a big night for La Habra, rushing for 131 yards in 17 carries.
Buena Park’s Earl Parker threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Francisco Rivera to make it 21-16 at the half.
Parker passed for 360 yards and four touchdowns. Rivera caught eight passes for 235 yards and three touchdowns.
