Two people were killed Monday in separate incidents within five miles of each other on the San Diego Freeway, police said.

In the first incidentat about 5:45 p.m. in Westminster, a car in rush-hour traffic just south of Valley View Street struck a sound wall, then careened into bushes, said Katrina Lundgren, a spokeswoman for the California Highway Patrol. One occupant of the car was pronounced dead at the scene, she said.

The second fatality happened nearly two hours later. Lundgren said police received reports of a body in the middle lane of the freeway just south of Warner Avenue in Fountain Valley.

“Evidently the body was in the lane and several vehicles hit it,” she said. “We don’t know how it happened, who it was, how they got there. There was a vehicle at the scene in the ice plants, but we don’t know whether it belongs to that party.”

Neither victim had been identified late Monday, Lundgren said. Both incidents were under investigation.
