School Board Delays Final Decision on Belmont High

The Los Angeles Board of Education indicated Tuesday that it will delay its final decision on the fate of the environmentally plagued Belmont Learning Complex at least two weeks beyond the initial Nov. 23 deadline.

The board has asked district staff to prepare a recommendation on whether to complete or abandon the $200-million project, board member Valerie Fields said, adding that the recommendation won’t be ready before early December.

Fields made the announcement at the meeting of a committee convened to receive a commission report on what should be done with Belmont, which is now more than half completed.

That commission voted 4 to 3 last month to recommend going forward. Since then, its seven members have met several times to draft the 70-page report.

Board President Genethia Hayes had promised a decision by Nov. 23, the expiration date of the board’s July agreement allowing developer Temple Beaudry Partners to seal the buildings against the elements.

Last week the board voted to order the developer to suspend construction by Nov. 23, thus allowing more time to make a decision without incurring added costs.
