Council Agrees to Require Domestic Partner Benefits

LOS ANGELES — The City Council agreed to require large city contractors to offer health insurance benefits to their employees’ domestic partners.
The law, which still must be approved by the mayor, would apply to companies with city contracts of at least $5,000 that currently offer similar benefits to their employees.
“It’s a civil rights issue,” said Councilwoman Jackie Goldberg, adding that she didn’t believe the law would be overly taxing for most companies.
The city’s administrative officer estimates that about 1,200 companies that contract with the city will be affected by the law. More than 150 of those already provide such benefits.
The city already offers domestic partner benefits to its employees; about 3% of the work force takes advantage of it.
