SOUTHLAND ROUNDUP

San Diego 75, UC Irvine 62--That new car smell didn’t last very long for UC Irvine.

The Anteaters hoped to be better, but they are back to hoping and thinking after a losing to the University of San Diego in front of 1,261 in the Bren Center.

The Toreros (1-0) never trailed and led Irvine (0-1) by as many as 19.

“I’m sorry, I expected a better show,” Irvine Coach Pat Douglass said. “We looked like we had stage fright. You can’t fault kids for being nervous. But you have to deal with your nerves and relax.”

Dana White had 23 points to lead San Diego.

Irvine, meanwhile, generated little offensively expect for Marek Ondera (17 points, 12 rebounds) and Jerry Green (18 points).

The Anteaters, who were 6-20 last season, figured to have a more talented and deeper team. They shot 38% and got little from their new players.
