Webb’s Defense Shuts Down Capistrano Valley Christian

Claremont Webb was only at-large entry in the Southern Section Division XIII playoffs, but its defense was certainly playoff-worthy in a 14-0 upset of Capistrano Valley Christian in a first-round game Friday night at Laguna Beach High.

Capistrano Valley Christian (8-2) came into the game averaging 42 points and had the county’s ninth-leading rusher in running back Dustin Smith, who was averaging 168 yards.

But Smith was held to 48 yards in 17 carries. The Eagles, who rushed for 428 yards last week in a 62-0 victory, could muster just 94 yards on the ground Friday.

Webb (7-3) scored in the second quarter when quarterback Harbir Bhullar threw two touchdown passes. The first covered four yards and was caught by Aaron Hiedari. The second was for 29 yards to Suan Tan.

“I’m extremely proud of our team’s performance this year,” Capistrano Valley Christian Coach Keith Patefield said. “We just ran into a great defense tonight, but our kids shouldn’t hang their heads because they had a great season.”
