* Story line--Although post-concussion syndrome caused left wing Geoff Courtnall to retire last week and center Pierre Turgeon left Saturday’s game because of back spasms, the Blues don’t plan any trades. They may not need help, with a 4-0-2 streak and 6-1-2 surge. The all-Slovak line of Michal Handzus centering for Pavol Demitra and Lubos Bartecko is skillful and fun to watch. Detroit center Sergei Fedorov didn’t practice Monday and is day-to-day after being stunned following a hit that sent him headfirst to the ice Saturday at Edmonton. The Red Wings’ 4-0-1 streak ended with losses at Calgary and Edmonton last weekend, but they still lead the Central Division. Backup Ken Wregget started three of the last six games, but Chris Osgood shares the NHL lead in victories with 10 and ranks in the top five in goals-against at 1.92.

Helene Elliott

Helene Elliott was with the Los Angeles Times’ Sports department from 1989 to 2024, first as a staff writer and then, starting in 2006, as a columnist. She became the first female journalist to be honored with a plaque in the Hall of Fame of a major professional sport as the 2005 winner of the Hockey Hall of Fame’s Elmer Ferguson Award, awarded to writers “who have brought honor to journalism and to hockey.” A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., and graduate of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, she has covered 18 Olympics.
