Irvine Gets 2 Women’s Soccer Commitments

Erin Tuvey and Haley MacMallan have committed to play women’s soccer at UC Irvine, Tuvey said Monday.

Tuvey, a midfielder and forward, was a four-time all-league selection at Olympia (Wash.) High School. MacMallan, a forward, was a four-time all-league selection at Tacoma Curtis High School.

Both play for the FC Royals, a club team in Tacoma.

CROSS-COUNTRY

UC Irvine’s Courtney Baird finished 148th and Jon Doroski 201st in the NCAA cross-country men’s and women’s championships in Bloomington (Ind.) Monday.

In the women’s competition, Baird--who finished second in the Big West Conference race--ran the 5,000 meters in 18 minutes 19 seconds. In the men’s race, Doroski covered the 10,000 meters in 33:28.4.

WATER POLO

Golden West won its third consecutive community college state women’s water polo championship Sunday with a 9-6 victory over Riverside in the title game at Diablo Valley College.

Sharon Vanderpas scored six goals in the championship game and had 14 in the tournament.

The Rustlers have posted a record of 101-1-1 against community college competition over the last three years.

BASKETBALL

Cal State Fullerton freshman basketball player Dan Thompson has a stress fracture in his right foot and is expected to miss the next two to three games, an athletic department spokesman said Monday. Thompson’s injury is scheduled to be reevaluated next week.

DIVING

Robbie Quinn, a Southern Section champion from Laguna Hills High, has accepted a scholarship to California.

SOFTBALL

Darcey Brown of Los Alamitos High has signed to play softball at Long Beach State, Griffin Coach Renee Bergeron said. Brown played first base last season for Los Alamitos.

Breanne Cooley, an infielder at Woodbridge High, has committed to play softball at Harvard. Cooley earned All-Sea View League honors last season.

Villa Park High softball Coach Laura Kinnersley has resigned to pursue business interests. Kinnersley coached two seasons and compiled a 25-26-1 record.
