The City Council may consider restricting campaign contributions in council elections to limit the influence of political action committees.

Council members directed the city staff last week to research how some California cities limit campaign contributions and, based on staff’s findings, will then decide whether to formally consider the matter at a future meeting.

Councilman G. Wayne Eggleston, who brought up the issue, said he is concerned about political action committees--organizations representing corporations, unions or other special interests--increasing their presence in San Clemente.
