Jeremy Roenick made sure goalie Sean Burke was a winner in his Phoenix debut.

Roenick scored three goals and Burke, acquired from Florida on Nov. 19, stopped 35 shots as the Coyotes defeated the New Jersey Devils, 4-2, Thursday at Phoenix.

“Credit Sean Burke in goal,” Roenick said. “He made some great individual efforts. We really wanted to get a win for him in his first game.”

Burke was relieved to get a victory in his first appearance with Phoenix.

“It’s a mental thing,” Burke said. “If you don’t get a win in the first game you start to press a little bit. It’s a relief. I was really nervous today, until I got on the ice.”

Roenick recorded his first hat trick since joining the Coyotes three seasons ago.

“Finally one here,” he said.

Teppo Numminen also scored for the Coyotes. Scott Niedermayer and Petr Sykora scored for the Devils.

New Jersey failed to score on any of its four power plays against the Coyotes, the league’s top penalty killers.

“It was frustrating for the team,” said New Jersey goalie Chris Terreri, who made 21 saves. “We just never got anything going. And personally, it was frustrating. I just wasn’t sharp.”

Calgary 2, Chicago 1--Cory Stillman scored at 2:05 of overtime to give the Flames a victory over the Blackhawks at Calgary.

Calgary, which has an NHL-high six overtime victories, extended its season-high winning streak to three games.

Stillman’s goal, which came only five seconds after Chicago had killed off a penalty to Anders Eriksson, was the result of a couple lucky bounces.

Phil Housley’s shot from the blue line deflected off Jeff Shantz’s skate to the front of the net where it hit Stillman’s skate and slipped past goaltender Jocelyn Thibault.

Ottawa 6, Atlanta 3--Vaclav Prospal had two goals and an assist as the Senators tied a team record with a five-goal period in a victory over the Thrashers at Atlanta.

Ottawa overcame a 3-0 first-period deficit with its five-goal second period against Atlanta goalie Scott Langkow.
