Police are trying to establish the identity of a homeless man whose skull was cracked when he was struck by a car Thursday.

The man, an African American in his mid-30s, was one of four people struck by a sedan that left the roadway at North Main and Alameda streets, Los Angeles police said. Police said he was listed in “severe condition with spinal and skull fractures” Friday at County-USC Medical Center.

Also struck and hospitalized were Robert Lee Robinson Jr. of Bell, 37, Jonathon Branch, 44, of Los Angeles and Jim Riggins, 38, of Los Angeles. Police said Branch may have a broken hip and Riggins suffered bruises on his head and face.

The driver, 31-year-old Juan Flores, was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and was also hospitalized.

A bus stop bench and three brick tree planters at the intersection where the men were struck is a frequent meeting ground for transients. Three streets intersect at the corner--Alameda, Main and Spring--near Pueblo de Los Angeles State Historical Park.

Before careening off the road, Flores’ car hit two stopped cars. No one in those cars was seriously injured.
