Maine a Real Pain, but Georgia Escapes

The third-ranked Georgia Bulldogs got eight points in overtime from Coco Miller and six from twin sister Kelly as they escaped with a 79-68 victory over the Maine Black Bears in the championship game of the Dead River Classic Saturday at Orono, Maine.

Kelly Miller finished with 29 points and Coco Miller with 18 as Georgia improve to 6-0.

Jamie Cassidy had 29 points and 17 rebounds for Maine (1-2). Maine’s Amy Vachon tied the score, 61-61, with a layup with four seconds left in regulation.

Georgia led by 15 but went scoreless over the last 7:37 of regulation.

“We just fought back real hard and stayed together,” Vachon said. “To come back from 15 points down against a team like Georgia, we have to be proud of that.”

The Bulldogs outscored Maine 8-2 in the first three minutes of overtime.

No. 2 Louisiana Tech 96, Southeast Missouri State 54--The Lady Techsters (2-1) dominated the Otahkians (1-2) throughout and got 21 points from Betty Lennox to advance to the championship game of the Lady Rebel Shootout at Las Vegas.

Louisiana Tech, coming off a 74-72 loss to Mississippi State last Monday, forced 28 turnovers, had 22 steals and outscored Southeast Missouri State 18-0 on fast-break opportunities.

“We needed a game like this coming off that loss,” Lady Techster Coach Leon Barmore said. “The point of coming to this tournament and coming to Las Vegas was to have fun, but we really needed a win.”

Louisiana Tech faces UCLA next Sunday in Orlando, Fla.

No. 15 Illinois 77, No. 6 Notre Dame 67-- Allison Curtin scored 28 points, and the Illini (5-1) made 21 of 37 free throws, to upset the Irish (1-1) at Champaign, Ill. Curtin, a sophomore guard, made 14 of 18 free throws, while Notre Dame, as a team, made 11 of 18.

No. 7 North Carolina State 73, Kansas State 72--Tynesha Lewis, who had 14 of her 16 points in the second half, made a free throw with five seconds left as the Wolfpack (5-0) edged the Wildcats (1-2) in the Cancun Tournament of Basketball at Cancun, Mexico.

No. 8 Rutgers 63, No. 25 Wisconsin 61--Tasha Pointer made an off-balance shot in the lane with 38 seconds to go and the Lady Knights (2-1) rallied from six points down in the final 3:06 to beat the Badgers (2-1) in the Coca-Cola Classic at Piscataway, N.J.

Wisconsin put together a 17-2 spurt to take a 57-51 lead with 4:07 left the to play and led 59-50 with 3:06 remaining.

Pointer led Rutgers scorers with 16 points.

No. 9 Penn State 96, St. Joseph’s 64--Lisa Shepard scored 24 of her 31 points in the first 25 minutes in leading the Nittany Lions (3-0) to a first-round victory in the Duke Classic at Durham, N.C.

No. 11 Auburn 72, Kent 56--Conswella Sparrow scored 18 points, including 16 in the second half, to lead the Tigers (4-0) over the Golden Flashes (2-2) in the championship game of the Thanksgiving Classic at Auburn, Ala.

No. 16 Oregon 73, No. 21 Virginia Tech 53--Tournament MVP Nicole Strange scored 21 points as the Ducks (3-0) easily beat the Hokies (2-2) in the championship game of the Pepsi Shootout at Eugene, Ore.

No. 18 Boston College 60, Massachusetts 45--Cal Bouchard made four three-point shots in the first 10 minutes to lead the Eagles (4-2) over the Minutewomen (0-4) at Amherst, Mass. Bouchard finished with 17 points, 15 on three-point shots.

No. 22 Louisiana State 68, St. Mary’s 65--Marie Ferdinand scored a career-high 21 points to lead the Tigers in overtime at the Walnut Creek Thanksgiving Classic championship game in Moraga, Calif.

No. 24 Arizona 74, New Mexico 63--Angela Lackey scored five of her 16 points during a late 10-2 run as the Wildcats (4-0) held on to beat the Lobos (2-1) at Tucson.

Marquette 69, Oregon State 56--Tournament MVP Lisa Oldenburg scored 16 points and helped the Golden Eagles (3-1) win the championship game of the OSU Classic at Corvallis, Ore.

Abbie Willenborg, who joined Oldenburg on the all-tournament team, led Marquette with 19 points. Marquette’s last 14 points came from the foul line.

Hawaii 73, Washington 59--Dainora Puida led the Wahine (3-2) with 19 points and eight rebounds in the semifinals of the Asahi Rainbow Wahine Classic at Honolulu. Loree Payne had 17 points for the Huskies (2-3).
