Man Sentenced on Slumlord Charges

A local man was sentenced Monday to 960 hours of community service after pleading no contest to several slumlord charges at a residential hotel he owns in the Pico-Union district.

Anthony Cano De La Vara, 60, was also fined $3,121 and placed on summary probation for three years by Los Angeles Municipal Commissioner Kristi Lousteau.

De La Vara pleaded no contest to 10 violations of the city’s health, building and safety codes discovered during a sweep by city inspectors of his 25-unit hotel at 810 S. Beacon Ave., prosecutors said.

The judge ordered the cleanup of the two-story structure, which has remained boarded up since the Los Angeles city attorney’s office filed charges in June against De La Vara, said Deputy City Atty. Ken Kambara.

City inspectors, Kambara said, found that several rooms had unsafe kitchens and locked fire exits, were missing stair rails or lacked electricity, heat, fire alarm systems or sprinklers.
