Jackson’s Marriage Fact Sheet Vetoed by Governor

Gov. Gray Davis has vetoed a bill by Ventura County Assemblywoman Hannah-Beth Jackson that would have required distribution of a fact sheet to couples when they take out their wedding licenses.

The fact sheet would have informed a prospective husband and wife of their legal rights and responsibilities in marriage.

That is information Jackson, a family lawyer, said sometimes surprises couples when their marriage ends up in trouble years later.

Davis said such a warning is unnecessary.

“The State of California can reasonably assume that people entering into marriage are fully cognizant of their contractual rights and responsibilities,” the governor wrote.

Davis said he would support, however, a measure requiring the state to create a marriage fact sheet and make it available to couples upon request, rather than making its distribution mandatory.
