A female pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run accident Friday evening that also left her daughter and 5-year-old grandson injured, officials said.

The boy was airlifted to Childrens Hospital in Los Angeles where he was listed in critical condition with head wounds and fractures, said Lt. Ron Tingle of the Los Angeles Police Department. His 24-year-old mother, whose leg and ankle were broken, was taken to Providence-Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, where she was in stable condition.

The fatally injured woman was 55, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells. Officials did not release the names of any of the victims.

The three were hit shortly after 5:30 p.m. on Lanark Street, about a block west of Van Nuys Boulevard, Wells said. Several blocks away, at the intersection of Burton Street and Brimfield Avenue, police investigators found a white sedan with a broken windshield. “The damage to the car was consistent with the accident,” said Tingle. The car was impounded.

No arrests had been made as of Friday night.

The accident occurred just two days after the release of a study showing that Los Angeles County leads the state in pedestrian casualties, with an average of four people killed weekly. The study also showed that being hit by a car while walking was the second leading cause of death for California children ages 5 to 12.
