Overtime Goal Lifts Vanguard Over Biola

Diego Goni scored with four seconds left in overtime to lift Vanguard to a 2-1 victory and snap Biola’s eight-game win streak in a Golden State Athletic Conference men’s soccer game Saturday at Vanguard.

Goni had scored earlier, in the 53rd minute, to give Vanguard (6-2, 2-0) a 1-0 lead, but Biola (8-3-1, 1-1) answered with a goal from Ben Orr in the 75th minute.

The victory puts Vanguard, which has won six straight games, in at least a tie for first in the GSAC.

In another conference game:

Concordia 4, Hope International 2--Randy Waddell scored two goals and Trevor Bermudez and Mark Bauer each scored one to lead visiting Concordia (2-9, 1-1).

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s soccer:

Concordia 3, Hope International 0--Rachel Peterson scored goals in the 29th and 59th minutes and Stephanie Rubio scored in the 35th minute to lead visiting Concordia (4-3, 1-1), which outshot Hope International, 32-3. Concordia goalkeeper Crystal Rodriguez made one save for the shutout. Sarah Howerton made 11 saves for Hope International.

Vanguard 1, Biola 0--Jen Bird scored in the first half on a penalty kick for host Vanguard (8-3, 2-0). Robin Landauer had seven saves in goal for the Lions.

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s water polo:

USC 10, UC Irvine 1--Peter Janov, Stever O’Rourke and Allen Basso each scored two goals to help third-ranked USC (8-1, 2-0) hand the fifth-ranked Anteaters their fifth loss in their last six games. USC’s Richard McEvoy made seven saves and kept UCI (3-6, 0-3) scoreless until the fourth quarter when Mike Allaire scored with five seconds left in regulation.

In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:

UC Irvine 3, Cal State Fullerton 0--The UC Irvine women’s volleyball team picked up its first Big West Conference victory of the year by defeating Cal State Fullerton, 15-11, 15-12, 15-11. The Anteaters were led by middle blocker Larissa Carter, who had 19 kills. Outside hitter Brooke Witt had 16.

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s volleyball:

Fresno Pacific 3, Vanguard 0--Freshman Lin Gao had 14 kills and 10 digs as Fresno Pacific defeated Vanguard, 15-5, 15-1, 15-9. Qin Wen added 10 kills and six service aces, while Micheleen Issa chipped in with eight kills and three blocks. The Sunbirds ended it on their fourth match point with Wen’s sixth service ace.

In the Wittenberg women’s volleyball tournament:

Chapman 3, Kalamazoo (Mich.) 0--Courtney Stimmler had 14 kills to help Chapman earn a 17-15, 15-9, 16-14 victory in the seventh-place game in Springfield, Ohio. The Panthers improved to 6-8.
