L.A. County Leads Way in Growth of Business, Employees

Los Angeles County topped the nation in growth of businesses and employees, but Manhattan led the way in payrolls, new government figures show.

The number of people working for private companies in Los Angeles County jumped 118,761 between 1996 and 1997, the nation’s biggest gain, the Census Bureau said in a report being released today.

At the same time, the county gained 3,287 businesses with employees, also tops in the nation. Orange County gained 2,176 businesses in the period, fourth on the list.

The biggest growth in payrolls came in New York County, including Manhattan, which saw a jump of $8.2 billion, to $110.3 billion. Los Angeles County was second in payroll gain, with a jump of $6.4 billion, to $115.8 billion. The counties with the largest employee gains from 1996 to 1997 were Los Angeles, 3,588,831, up 118,761; Dallas, 1,369,535, up 82,455; Maricopa (Phoenix), Ariz., 1,192,173, up 79,347; Harris (Houston), Texas, 1,511,905, up 67,653; and New York, 1,925,194, up 66,707.
