Buick Donation Is in Berganio’s Name

Buick Motor Division has made the last donation of $23,122 to a $100,000 commitment to the National Hispanic Scholarship Fund in the name of pro golfer David Berganio Jr. of Sylmar.

Buick, one of Berganio’s sponsors, committed to match $100,000 of his earnings during the 1999 season.

Berganio, from Alemany High, earned $48,095 on the PGA Tour, including $26,186 at the U.S. Open.

He ranks 28th on the Nike Tour earnings list at $74,355, earning $40,500 for winning the Nike Permian Basin Open in Odessa, Texas.

BASEBALL

* Steve Landress has resigned as baseball coach at Cleveland High and will be replaced by his top assistant, Joe Cascione.

Landress, 49, has coached the Cavaliers since 1991. Cascione played at St. Genevieve and Pierce College.

VOLLEYBALL

* Royal High reentered the Southern Section Division I-A poll after winning its girls’ tournament. The Highlanders are No. 6, just behind No. 5 Buena.

Westlake remained No. 2 behind Santa Margarita in Division II-AA.

Harvard-Westlake, which finished second at the San Marcos tournament, remained No. 2 behind Bishop Montgomery in Division III-AA.

FOOTBALL

* Quarterbacks Farhaad Azimi of Moorpark College and Chris Kobe of Canyons were selected Western State Conference offensive co-players of the week.

Linebacker Terrance Chapman of Valley was selected defensive co-player of the week.
