2 Women Held in Slaying; 3rd Sought

Two women have been arrested but a third remains at large in the fatal shooting of a cabdriver last June, Los Angeles police said Thursday.

Detectives said all three women--Mabelin Torres, 21, Adriana Uribe, 22, and Crystal Dawn Vigil, 19--fled after the attack that claimed the life of Gerardo Torres Jimenez on June 21.

Torres Jimenez, 26, an independent taxi driver, had been heading through Hollywood at about 12:45 a.m. when a car began following his cab, investigators said. Attempting evasive action, he struck some parked cars, investigators said. Police said Uribe got out of the car that had been following the cab and shot him in the head.

Officers declined to discuss a motive in the shooting or explain how Uribe and her two alleged accomplices were identified.

Police said that on Sept. 5, Torres was arrested on suspicion of possessing marijuana as she attempted to enter the United States from Mexico at the Otay Mesa border crossing. She has been booked on suspicion of murder while awaiting trail in San Diego County on a marijuana smuggling charge.

Uribe was arrested Wednesday at the San Ysidro border crossing when a federal agent recognized her from a wanted bulletin. She was transferred to the Van Nuys jail. Vigil’s whereabouts are unknown, police said.
