Villa Park 19, Savanna 14--Marquis Colvin rushed for 169 yards and two touchdowns in 27 carries and Bryan Arguello caught four passes for 56 yards, including a touchdown, for Villa Park at El Modena High.

The Spartans (3-2) had to hold on in the second half as Savanna made a late push behind running backs Marcus Jimmerson and Micos Benjamin and an inspired defense.

Trailing, 19-0, Savanna (3-0) scored on two straight possessions to pull to within 19-14 with 4:30 to play in the game. Jimmerson, who finished with 101 yards rushing, scored on one- and four-yard runs to get the Rebels close.

Savanna then booted it deep on the ensuing kickoff and asked its defense to get the ball back.

But Colvin busted a 23-yard run on first down from the Villa Park 20-yard line. Six runs by Colvin later, Villa Park had the ball at the Savanna 10 and was able to run out the clock.

Colvin rushed for 70 yards on the final drive, which was 47 more than he had the rest of the second half. He finished the first half with 76 yards, including touchdown runs of one and 14 yards.

“Savanna started to blitz more in the second half and I was getting stopped,” said Colvin, who has 788 yards rushing this season. “But someone told me from upstairs to bounce outside on that last drive. I started to cut back and it worked.”

Everything was working for the Spartans early in the game. They scored touchdowns on three of their first six possessions to go up 19-0.

The first score was a 13-yard touchdown pass from John Henry Jackson to Arguello with 4:30 left in the first quarter. Jackson completed seven of 10 passes for 96 yards.
