Steve Young, bothered because of post-concussion symptoms, won’t play Sunday at St. Louis and Jeff Garcia will make his second consecutive start at quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers.

Garcia, who led the 49ers to a 24-22 victory over Tennessee in his first start, will be backed up by Steve Stenstrom.

Pat Barnes was re-signed by the 49ers Friday to serve as the emergency quarterback. Barnes was also with the team last week before being released Tuesday.

Several NFL players apparently were victims of a high-roller accused by federal investigators of bilking investors for at least $31 million, the Austin American-Statesman reported.

FBI agents believe the players, including three members of the Arizona Cardinals and one Cleveland Brown player, contributed to a $5.5-million investment wired to Brian Russell Stearns by Los Angeles sports agent Robert Caron.

In court documents unsealed Thursday, Cardinal players Eric Swann, Johnny McWilliams and Larry Centers, who now plays for the Washington Redskins, all invested money with Stearns.

Cardinal wide receiver Chad Carpenter, who was propositioned to join the group, told Internal Revenue Service investigators that Brown offensive lineman Lomas Brown invested $300,000 to $400,000.

FBI agents believe the players gave Stearns the money through Caron. Caron said he knew Stearns but had nothing to do with the investments.
