LEADING MEN

JOE HAMILTON

Quarterback, Georgia Tech

Hamilton was Elway-esque in moving Georgia Tech 79 yards from its two-yard line with 1:10 left to a game-tying field goal with five seconds. He added the game-winning touchdown run in overtime for good measure.

Saturday: 14 for 26, 273 yards, 2 TDs

Season: 79 for 117, 1,347 yards,

12 TDs

Next: at Duke, Saturday

PETER WARRICK

Wide receiver, Florida State

Warrick can run a defense ragged, but it appears that he won’t be caught looking that way off the field. Those economics courses must be pretty good at Florida State--getting department store clothing at five cents on the dollar is a darn good deal.

Saturday: Since he couldn’t play, a shopping-gate party was an option

en route to Doak Campbell Stadium.

Season: Enough bargain apparel for any leading man to look good at Heisman Trophy award dinner.

Next: Court appearance, Monday.

RON DAYNE

Running back, Wisconsin

While Wisconsin was winning one for the Gimper (Coach Barry Alvarez), Dayne was losing ground in trying to pass Ricky Williams as major college football’s career rushing leader. He came into Saturday’s game needing to average 157 yards, but that figure is now at 172.

Saturday: 25 carries, 80 yards, 1 TD

Season: 158 carries, 853 yards,

11 touchdowns.

Next: Indiana, Saturday.

Understudies: Shaun Alexander, running back, Alabama; Drew Brees, quarterback, Purdue.
