Group Makes Pet Adoption Easier

Share

Hoping to encourage more pet placements during Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog month, the Humane Society has agreed to spay or neuter all adopted dogs at no cost--a $45 savings to new pet owners.

For anyone considering getting a dog, now is the time, said Joyce George, Humane Society president. New owners will only be charged a $20 dog adoption fee. If a puppy is too young to be altered when adopted, a $45 deposit to cover the spaying or neutering will be requested. The amount will be refunded once the pet is altered.

Additionally, the Humane Society continues its efforts to help feed the pets of homeless people or those in low-income households. Through the end of October, the society is selling surplus pet carriers and dog houses to benefit its Carriers to Kibbles program.

Carriers will be sold at the Ojai shelter, 402 Bryant St., at costs ranging from $5 to $25, while dog houses will go for $25 to $40. Other pet cages--for everything from birds to iguanas-- will sell from $5 to $40.

“A carrier is a good idea anyhow now that we’re in flood season,” said Humane Society spokesman Tim Dewar, explaining that the devices come in handy in case there is a need to evacuate a home or area. “It’s just a lot safer.”

People in need of assistance feeding their pets can register at the Humane Society in Ojai or at the Humane Society Thrift Store, 540 E. Main St., Ventura.

The shelter is open for adoptions seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, call 646-6505.
