Pedestrian Safety

The article about the tragic death of the pedestrian, killed on Oct. 4 in the early morning hours while crossing a busy street, stated that there will be a campaign to educate drivers to be aware of pedestrians in Santa Ana. While this is needed, there should also be a program to educate pedestrians about the dangers of crossing where there are no crosswalks.

With a large population of immigrants in Santa Ana, these people may not be used to the volume of traffic in Orange County. I have lived in Santa Ana all my life and almost daily see people crossing very busy streets (some pushing baby strollers or with toddlers in hand) in the middle of the block.

I have seen drivers stop for these jaywalkers only to be rear-ended by another vehicle. Another problem is in the Civic Center area, where pedestrians jump off the sidewalk in front of moving traffic, insisting on their right of way. Pedestrians need to learn that just because you have the legal right of way, any time you have a confrontation with a moving vehicle, you are going to lose.
