Gore Gets Backing of Union

The United Food and Commercial Workers board voted unanimously in Los Angeles on Sunday to put its 1.4 million members behind Vice President Al Gore’s bid for the presidency.
The endorsement, which came after AFL-CIO President John Sweeney pressed Gore’s case in a private meeting, comes on the eve of the convention of the AFL-CIO’s 13 million members.
Gore’s camp is pressing to win the endorsement of the AFL-CIO from Democratic rival Bill Bradley, who made a surprisingly strong case among the federation’s officials. Bradley’s message for a delay in the decision began to stick among some of the labor leaders.
