County Orders Study of Recent Fatal Accidents
The County Board of Supervisors passed an emergency motion Tuesday requesting that a new task force on pedestrian safety immediately investigate several recent accidents that have left six dead in the region.
On Oct. 8, a mother and two of her young sons were killed in Boyle Heights while walking to school. The next day, two hit-and-run drivers struck and killed a 4-year-old boy when he ran across a street in El Sereno. On Tuesday morning, a woman died after being hit by a car in Wilmington, and a 51-year-old man was killed by an MTA bus in Westlake.
The motion by Supervisor Gloria Molina directed the County/City Pedestrian Safety Task Force to review the details of the accidents and find out if any measures could have prevented them. The task force will report to the board by Nov. 15.
The most recent accidents came just two weeks after a study by the Surface Transportation Policy Project named Los Angeles County as the most dangerous place in the state for pedestrians--especially children.
