Red Wings Power Up the Offense

The Detroit Red Wings finally got their power play working.

Steve Yzerman moved into a tie for eighth place on the NHL career scoring list and Detroit went three for eight with the man advantage as the Red Wings beat the St. Louis Blues, 4-2, Wednesday night.

Detroit’s power play was only four for 18 and ranked 10th in the NHL through four games before Larry Murphy, Igor Larionov and Nicklas Lidstrom scored with the man advantage against the Blues.

Yzerman’s assist on Larionov’s tiebreaking goal in the second period was his 1,487th career point, tying him with former teammate Paul Coffey for eighth place.

San Jose 2, Dallas 0--Niklas Sundstrom scored early in the first period and goaltender Steve Shields made 35 saves for the Sharks at Dallas.

Before the game, Dallas activated center Mike Modano and defenseman Darryl Sydor.

Toronto 3, Florida 2--Yanic Perreault scored the winning goal on a power play late in the third period at Toronto.

Colorado 2, Boston 1--Adam Foote scored at 15:16 of the third period as the Avalanche opened the new Pepsi Center with a win.

Calgary 4, Vancouver 3--Valeri Bure scored with 1:55 left in overtime at Vancouver, Canada, as the Flames won their first game.

Carolina 3, Edmonton 3--The Hurricanes battled back three times, with Sami Kapanen tying the score at 18:09 of the third period at Edmonton.

The Detroit Red Wings acquired goalie Manny Legace off waivers from Vancouver . . . Defenseman Rhett Warrener agreed to a two-year contract with the Buffalo Sabres worth about $1.8 million.
