Camarillo Has Pacific View From Top

A Pacific View League cross-country meet Wednesday might be indicative of a bright future for Rio Mesa and a bright present for Camarillo.

Freshman Phillip Reid clocked 17:14 on the three-mile course at Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura to win the boys’ race for Rio Mesa and freshman Monica Serrano won the girls’ race in 20:52 for the Spartans.

Camarillo took the team titles in both races for the second time in as many league meets, defeating Hueneme, 39-50, in the boys’ race and downing the Spartans, 38-46, in the girls’ competition.

Reid trailed Shad Hopkins and Brandon Lucero--both of Camarillo--at the two-mile mark but surged ahead to win by 30 meters. Hopkins was second in 17:23, Lucero was third in 17:30 and freshman Johnny Zendejas took fourth for the Scorpions in 17:37.

Rio Mesa finished one point behind Hueneme in the boys’ meet.

Serrano ran with Nicole Richardson of Camarillo for the first 2 1/2 miles before pulling away for a nine-second victory.

The Scorpions placed four runners in the top 10.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Crescenta Valley def. Muir, 15-6, 15-10, 15-4--Senior Erica Land had 13 kills for the Falcons (6-4, 4-0) in a Pacific League victory at Crescenta Valley.

“Despite not passing well [Wednesday] we had a good game at the net,” Coach Jennifer Kunz said.

Marci English collected 36 assists and six digs for the Falcons.

Cornerstone Christian def. Laguna Blanca 15-10, 3-15, 15-8, 15-17, 15-11--Junior Lindsey Hilgerman had a .724 hitting percentage with 25 kills in 29 attempts for Cornerstone Christian in a Condor League match at Laguna Blanca.

Teammate Lisa Jin contributed 11 kills, nine digs, five blocks and five aces for Cornerstone Christian (7-1, 3-1), ranked fourth in the Southern Section Division V-A coaches poll.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

San Marcos 10, Simi Valley 8--The Pioneers juggled their lineup and almost upset the Royals in a nonleague match at Simi Valley.

San Marcos (8-1), ranked No. 7 in the Southern Section Division II poll, won six of nine singles matches but struggled in doubles against the Pioneers (10-4).

Simi Valley’s Rebecca Hunau and Stacy Gunawan, playing No. 2 doubles instead of their usual singles positions, won all three of their matches, dropping just six games.

Buena 15, Rio Mesa 3--Senior Amanda Streeton and junior Ashley DeSmeth started slowly but got stronger while sweeping at No. 3 doubles for host Buena (10-1) in a nonleague match.

Streeton and DeSmeth defeated No. 3 Laura Albright and Natalie Cashin, 7-5, then downed No. 2 Michelle McKinney and Juliet Kong, 6-2, and finished by beating No. 1 Alisa De la Torre and Tessa Maulhardt, 6-0.

MEN’S WATER POLO

Ventura 18, Pierce 4--Vern Moen scored four goals, and Joel Ashby and Zack Schuler each had three for the Pirates (12-7, 4-0) in a Western State Conference game at Pierce.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Harvard-Westlake 12, Crespi 4--Joe Axelrad had 18 saves for the Wolverines (11-3, 2-0) in a Mission League victory at Crespi.
