Fired Teacher
Re “Teacher’s Firing Over Gender Change Stirs Controversy,” Oct. 11: As a weekend cross-dresser, I am very sympathetic with the plight of Dana Rivers, who lost her job due to her changing her gender on the job. I know of many other cross-dressers who are very secretive about their cross-dressing activities for fear of job harassment or ridicule.
Although cross-dressing is glamorized on television, my activities consist of monthly support-group meetings and casual dinners at gay-friendly establishments. The cross-dressers I associate with are well over 40, professional people, heterosexual and far from sexy. We try to blend in and avoid controversy. Hopefully, Rivers may avail herself of recently enacted legislation prohibiting discrimination in housing and employment against transgendered people to win reinstatement of her job.
