UCLA (3-3, 1-2) vs. California (2-3, 1-1)

* Kickoff: 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Rose Bowl, Channel 7.

* Story line: This has been a series of streaks. UCLA has won the last four meetings, which came after Cal won five in a row, which came after UCLA won 18 in a row. Last season produced the best showing by the UCLA defense in 1998.

* UCLA update: A victory over the Bears ties the Pacific 10 record for consecutive home wins in the conference. The streak is at 11 since the loss to Stanford in 1996, one shy of USC’s mark from 1986-89.

* California update: The Bears are on the road for the third week in a row for the first time since 1988. The first two games, against Washington and Brigham Young, have resulted in losses. Counting the second-week defeat at Nebraska, Cal has been outscored, 114-35, in its three contests outside Berkeley.

* Edge to UCLA: The defense is making noteworthy strides, the quarterback is sound and the offensive line is gaining experience.
