After-School Program Wins Grant for Sports
The Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles has awarded $364,470 to support youth sports activities at L.A.’s BEST, an after-school program in some of the city’s poorest neighborhoods.
Known formally as L.A.’s Better Educated Students for Tomorrow, the program has provided after-school activities to more than 45,000 students ages 5 through 12 during its 11-year history.
The grant was the most substantial among those awarded this week to 21 youth organizations in Southern California, for a combined sum of more than $1 million.
The foundation also awarded grants of up to $5,000 to five organizations for the purchase of sports equipment or uniforms or to establish scholarships.
Other grant recipients included Students Run L.A., a program that trains youngsters for the Los Angeles Marathon.
The Amateur Athletic Foundation was set up with surplus funds from the 1984 Olympics.
