Krayzelburg, Quance on ‘A’ Team

Lenny Krayzelburg of Studio City and Kristine Quance-Julian of Santa Monica, who attended Granada Hills High, were selected to USA Swimming’s national “A” team.

Krayzelburg was the top qualifier in the 100- and 200-meter backstrokes, events in which he set world records last summer.

Quance-Julian qualified eighth in the 400-meter individual medley.

Mark Warkentin of Buenaventura Swim Club in Ventura made the national “B” team in the 200-meter freestyle and the 800-meter freestyle.

Warkentin, a USC junior, also was named to USA Swimming’s All-American team in the 200-, 400-, 800- and 1,500-meter events.

Senior Ian Prichard of Buena High earned All-American honors in the 800 and the 1,500. Krayzelburg was selected in both backstrokes.

Making the women’s All-American team were Carly Geehr of La Canada Flintridge in the 200- and 400-meter freestyles, and Quance-Julian in the 200- and 400-individual medleys and the 200-meter butterfly.

Prichard and Anthony Ervin, The Times’ boys’ regional swimmer of the year from Hart High, were named to USA Swimming’s national junior team.

The national junior team is made up of swimmers who were the fastest performers in their events in the nation among boys 17 and under and among girls 15 and under.

Prichard made the team in the 400, 800 and 1,500 freestyles, Ervin in the 100 meters.

HONORS

* Joseph Chefalo of Newhall will be inducted into The Citadel’s Hall of Fame during homecoming festivities in November.

The New York native, who has been a resident of the Santa Clarita Valley for more than 30 years and operates a small consulting firm, graduated from The Citadel in 1959.

He played football for four years, becoming captain his senior season. He averaged 4.5 yards per carry as a running back his final three years and started at cornerback all four seasons, never missing a game.

Chefalo also played baseball at The Citadel, switching between the outfield, first base and pitcher.

EQUESTRIAN

* The Interscholastic Equestrian League will open the season at Sunday with a competition at Hansen Dam Equestrian Center. The competition goes from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Nearly 200 riders from Los Angeles and Ventura counties will compete for individual and team points.

This is the first of four competitions this season that involve riders from high school and youth divisions.

GOLF

* Jason Gore of Valencia, Chris Zambri of Westlake Village and Jeff Sanday of South Pasadena, who attended Cal State Northridge, have advanced to the second stage of PGA Tour Qualifying School.

Gore shot 73-75-72-71--291 and Sanday finished at 72-75-73-71--291 at the Bayonet and Black Horse courses in Seaside, Calif.

Zambri totaled 70-67-68-65--270 at Talking Stick Golf Course in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The second stage of qualifying school will be played at six sites the first two weeks of November, with the final stage scheduled for the Doral Golf Resort and Spa in Miami on Nov. 17-22.

Darren Angel of Northridge shot 71-69-70-69--279 at Talking Stick and failed to qualify for the second stage.

Chad Wright of Ventura totaled 71-74-74-74--293 on the Bayonet and Blackhorse courses and did not qualify.

* One team is being sought to participate in the La Canada High boys’ basketball tournament on Dec. 16-23 at La Canada.

* Fundamentals for baseball catchers will be taught at Rob Paramo’s catching clinic from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Dec. 4-5 at Ventura College.

Cost of the clinic is $50 per player.

Providing instruction will be Steve Soliz, a graduate of Rio Mesa High who is in the Cleveland Indians’ organization.
